Happy Diwalli!

Diwalli (the festival of lights) is ancient, 5 day, Hindu festival celebrated every year between mid October and mid November. Diwali is one of the largest and brightest festivals in India. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of good over evil. Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate, and decorate their homes. On Diwali night, people dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home nad participate in family prayers. There are also fireworks. Then a family feast including mithai (sweets) is held. There is also the giving of gifts to family and close friends.

I am half Indian however my relatives are Sikh and traditionally celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas(Prisoner Release Day), which falls the same day as Diwalli, too. Bandi Chhor Divas celebrates the release from prison in Gwalior of the Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind, and 52 other princes with him (Thanks wiki for that info).
